Kamidana, Shinto Shrine Altar

Hi there!

Do you know we carry Shinto Shrine Alter (Kamidana 神棚 (Miyagata 宮形)) for your home or for your Doujou?

So today, let us share how to choose a proper Kamidana for ourselves.

1.  Traditional ones of your family and of the district you live.

2.  Kamisama you will welcome.
The most popular general Kamisama, for home (for family), for company, for Dojou, for school?
Kamisama for the districts? Or Kamisama for bussiness (Oinari-sama)? Fukujin-sama or Taisha-sama or any other Kamisama you believe in?

3. Placement :
3-1  How big room (and cost) you can afford for the Kamidana. (Of course , we believe Kamisama will not see how much we pay for the Kamidana. But some people like (and maybe need?) gorgeous ones.)

3-2  We usually put two or three Ofuda inside of the Kamidana.
One is Amaterasu Oomikami-sama (The biggest, general, popular Kamisama in Japan), for Ujigami (Ubusuna)-sama (The one for the districts), and for the one in your heart. (Maybe somewhere you visit? or Kamisama of your Doujou , Ninjutsu school, your respected Samurai believe in maybe?)

If you will select one door Kamidana, put the three of them layered. If you will select three doors, put the Amaterasu-sama in the centre, right and left your districts' Kamisama and your special Kamisama.

You might be an owner and the big Sensei of your Doujou or the school. If  you are able to contact "your" bigger Sensei , ask him which Kamidana he holds? Following his choice might be the best way to select your new Kamidana.

If you just like Shinto idea, and will have one for your home, we will recommend the Shinmei one-door sk-001.

We are able to offer accessories for Kamidana, such as vases for Sakai, pots for Omiki, saucers and so on.

For the Ofuda(御札), as it is not commercial item, we are not able to carry.

How to choose Tabi?

Pure white cotton Kimono tabi is one of the necessaries for Kimono.
We line up variety of Kimono Tabi. How can we select the best one for you?

We have to admit that it is really difficult to find perfect one, because all of our feet are unique even we wear same size shoes.

But we hope today's post would be any help for you to choice your best one.

First of all, the size. We firstly recommend you the same size of your shoe size. Even this choice you might feel bit too tight at the first few times.
(Have you checked how to make your new Tabi comfortable? : HERE!)
When you are used to Tabi, try one size down.
Traditionally, a bit tight Tabi looks very cool.

Secondary, the material.
Synthetic materials are bit difficult. Most of our Tabi are cotton 100%, but some of them are mixed of synthetic fibres. However, we can say this is not "bad". For outside use, synthetic mixed might be good as they are better duster resist than cotton 100%.
However, you will wear them on Shosadai, Itajiki , wooden floor, we strongly recommend you 100% cotton sole one.

Our best recommendation (were Mai, Yuki and Hana before, but they are going to be discontinued. So, ) are now

1. TOMI (Cotton 100%) and reasonable price and have widest range of size
2. NOBIRU ( Synthetics mixed but this is really high quality and have a good reason of synthetic mixed.)

For martial use,  we recommend BUDO tabi , leather sole Tabi too.

Next time, let us explain regarding NOBIRU Tabi. We are afraid this Tabi is misunderstood, as it is synthetic mixed.

How to wash (white) Tabi

in washing net

1. Here's washing net.
I know hand washing is more recoomendable actually. So, I wash my Tabi by washing machine. I think washing-net keep the Tabi-clips away from hurting other laundry.
with toothbrush and toothpaste
2. If there are stains, use tooth brush and toothpaste (!!).
wash wash wash wash wash

and wash wash washwash wash.

bleacher!3. But mostly I skip the brushing and use bleacher. For patterned Tabi and/or coloured Tabi, you should be check the bleacher's instruction. (Some of bleachers will bleach ALL PATTERNS AND COLOURS and change your lovely Tabi to pure white.

throw into washing machine

4. Washing by machine : )
Of course, you can wash Tabi with other laundry. But just as same as ordinal laundry, you have to note when the laundry is including dark coloured ones. Separate washing is recommendable.

pinch insde5. Finish
I use hanging-drier (with clothespin) to dry. Please be noted to pinch
"inside" of the Tabi. Because the clothespin's mark can be covered when clipping (wearing).

How to handle Aizome (Japanese Indigo) products

Our Aizome products are dyed authentic Japanese indigo "Ai". For the first few tiems, the colour comes off on everything touched with those products.
Stay the "Ai" colours, before wearing (and before discolouring to to others), we recommend you RINSE after you receive it.

1. Make the vinegar-water-solution
The best comparison is 1/5 vinegar for a water.
It might be a cup of vinegar to water of a wash-tub. or a bottle or two bottles of vinegar to 1/3 water of bath-tub.

2. Water the Aizome product in the tub for a night or two nights

3. Rinse it by soap-water (very thin soap water) one time or two. This soap is for remove smell of vinegar.

4. Rinse it by water a couple of times until the discolouring stop.

If you hate the smell of vinegar, we can recommend you rinse it by water without vinegar. In this case, we recommend you to rinse by pure water, not warm , and without soap.

PLEASE BE NOTED THAT BATH-TUB MAY STAINED BY AI-INDIGO. Kitchen bleach might work to remove it, but it might be depends on the material.

We added a big size Zouri. size 4L, of which length is 30cm. Traditionally we wear one size smaller Zouri as our heels out from Zouri's sole. So this Zouri covers 31cm or 32cm shoe sizes.

For beginners, we recommend a just size Zouri or Geta. You might feel bit too tight for the first few times (even selected just-size). After a few times, it would be fit comfortably.
